A Fortress Among My People A Novel of Ancient Israel is a very good example of its genre. It is set in the time of the prophet Jeremiah.
The author J. Francis Hudson enters the mind of each of the main characters to move the story forward, while remaining faithful to the relevant information in the Bible. The imagery used is relevant to the time and there are many ideas which are worth reflecting upon. It is evident that Hudson believes in the God who speaks through some of the characters. She emphasises the inner turmoil of the prophet and relates it to modern ideas about mental illness.
The historical note points to the writings of Jeremiah and the historical books of the Bible relating to his time. They are designed to help the reader turn to the source of the story. I found the list of characters indispensable.
The book is available as a paperback or an e-book. Recommended reading especially for anyone who enjoys Francine Rivers’ books.
