Today I have been blogging for six months.
I know that isn’t very long in the grand scheme of things, but I’d like to mark the occasion by inviting you to join me in sharing your hints and tips for saving energy and resources.
If you are able to write a post about your own favourite ways of doing this, please link on the community pool, where I have floated the idea – I do like puns! Please use the category or tag Green lifestyle and tag blog carnival.
I’ll link back to all your posts.
My favourite energy saving tips
We have a device which was provided by our electricity supplier. It monitors the amount of electricity we use. With it we have detected
1) a light left on in the garage,
2) which of two ovens is the more efficient and
3) that leaving a paper shredder connected to the mains and switched to “auto” uses electricity.
When I am cooking on the hob, after the potatoes have come up to the boil, I usually transfer the pan to a smaller gas ring. (Less energy is required to keep water boiling than to raise its temperature.) Also I try to avoid boiling more water than I need to.
Tips for saving resources
After a bottle of soap or detergent has too little liquid left to extract it using the pump or squeezing the bottle, there is still a useful amount which can be used by diluting it.
When travelling by motor vehicle, plan journeys so that fuel is not wasted by too many comings and goings. In one visit to the nearest town, it should be possible to have a haircut and do some shopping, for instance.
Using public transport also saves fuel used as services run to a timetable. In rural areas the services may be reduced if they are not used by enough people.
Many materials can be recycled, depending on the local arrangements. Paper, cardboard, glass, drinks and food cans and some sorts of plastic, as well as many unwanted household items may be taken to recycling centres or even collected from your street. I always remove the paper from food cans and recycle them separately.
Another tip is that you consider whether you could use the material you are about to send for recycling. Recycling uses fuel. If you use the blank part of the paper you were about to recycle to make a shopping list, perhaps, you are not using new paper. One of the constituents of paper is wood and trees are cut down to provide it. Sustainable sources of paper are those where trees are planted to replace those felled. Recycled paper products tend to be fairly expensive, but their use is to be encouraged. Here is a photograph of a folder I have made using cardboard, old Christmas cards and an India tag. I could have used string or ribbon, but I happened to have a tag.
Unwanted cardboard can be useful in making items which might be bought and are probably made of plastic. Oil reserves are not unlimited and we should be careful how much plastic we use. Some plastics are not readily biodegradable and cause environmental problems.
Some charities either collect or accept unwanted goods, which they sell or pass on to people who need them.
Tips for producing less rubbish, garbage, trash or whatever you prefer to call it
Choose products with the least packaging. Use refills. If you are able to make your own compost, you can use it to grow food.
I haven’t even started on conserving water, but I think that’s enough to be going on with!
David wrote in Psalm 24 “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
I look forward to reading your posts.
“Please use the category or tag Green lifestyle and tag blog carnival.” Umm–you mean you want us to categorize and tag our work this way so you can find it? I’m lost here. If we link you to it, you can find it. I do not have either tag/category and it they would be out of place on my sites, I think. How about “Gramma’s Wisdom”? or just “Wisdom”? Really unsure about changing my categories and tags . . . help . . .
I’m sure it will be OK to use your preferred tags and link to my post. If we all used the same categories they would come up in the Reader for anyone who chose them. Sue
Oh. I get it. Okay, learning curve, here, but will try! 🙂
You use the right hand side of the dashboard to manage categories and tags, but remember to save the draft again or they don’t take effect! Sue
Did you want all new writing? I have written so many already about these topics, I think I should just make a directory page for them and I could link THIS to your tags, for the reader. If you don’t mind a dredge report. 🙂
That would be lovely- I don’t want to make a lot of work for people, just to raise awareness. Sue
Okay. About done! 😉
Good tips, Sue. I do most of these, and have been for years. It makes me feel like I’m doing my part, and besides, I really hate to waste things.
If everyone did them it would make a real difference. Some of them help save time too. Sue
[…] I’ve been invited to help a fellow blogger create a “carnival” which is basically a collections of bloggers using the same topic. Rather than rewrite so much […]
OKAY! I’ve done it.
I’ve linked to this post, too, so you need to approve the link if you want it to appear. However, the url for my post is:

I already have a commentor, too, who is a great one for using up scraps, so you might want to see if you can get her to join. 🙂
Very many thanks. I am looking forward to reading some of your posts. Sue
Interesting! Thanks for the tips for a greener lifestyle!
[…] another is about the letter “p”. To mark my first 6 months blogging, I wrote a post about saving energy and resources and launched it as a blog carnival (or group writing project). […]
[…] Hints and tips To mark 6 months of blogging I wrote a very different post. […]
[…] I also have a collage on my post Hints and tips. […]
I like the term upcycle, before throwing anything away…a broken headband, a couch, a picture you once loved and now hate I like to see how I can turn those into crafts. I get most of my ideas from pintrest, I would aso suggest searching for content there, they have a great diy section as well as tips on how to save energy. I always unplug everything when I leave for the weekends. Also here in Appleton w.e energy has a nice option, you can opt for paying a little more during they day for less during night-time and weekend usage. It’s a great alternative for people who aren’t home during the days. I’m a fashion blogger hence the headband hehe but I think no matter what your interest is this appeals to everyone! Nicely written.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Would you be interested in joining in with a blogging event if I try to get another one going? Sue
Sure thing, just let me know!
